Your First Visit to a Maine Dispensary: Checklist
Exactly what to bring, ask, and avoid on your first visit to a Maine adult-use cannabis dispensary — straight from Firestorm Bangor's intake counter.
A first dispensary visit usually takes 15–25 minutes if you walk in prepared. This checklist is what we email customers who book a first-time consult at Firestorm Bangor: what to bring, what to ask, and the three mistakes that cost first-timers a fun first session. Verified against Maine OCP requirements as of 2026.
Key facts
- Time on first visit
- 15–25 minutes
- Required ID
- 21+ government photo↗ src
- Payment
- Cash + CanPay only
- First-time discount
- 15% off
- 01
Bring 21+ government photo ID
Required at the door. US driver's license, US passport, military ID, state-issued ID — all accepted. Out-of-state IDs OK for adult-use purchase. No exceptions.
- 02
Bring cash or set up CanPay
Federal banking restrictions block credit cards. Cash works. CanPay debit (canpay.com) works — set up takes 5 minutes online or at the register. ATMs on-site.
- 03
Decide your goal before browsing
'Focused for a hike.' 'Chill on the couch.' 'Sleep.' 'Social.' Vague goals lead to vague recommendations. Specific goals get you a specific product.
- 04
Tell the budtender it's your first time
We tailor recommendations. We start with low-dose edibles, mild pre-rolls, or 1:1 CBD:THC products for first-timers. Volunteer the information.
- 05
Ask three questions, not twenty
What's a beginner dose for this product? How long until I feel it? When should I re-dose if I want more? That's enough for a first visit.
Mistakes to avoid
Asking 'what's strongest?' — You don't want strongest. You want appropriate-for-you. The budtender's job is to get you the second one.
Buying flower without a way to smoke it — Bring or buy a piece (pipe, papers, or a pre-roll). Don't get to your car with flower and no gear.
Eating two edibles when the first didn't kick in at 45 min — Wait the full 90 minutes. The first one is still coming.
A lot of the customers I help every shift are first-timers. We're not judging — we're glad you came here first instead of buying from a guy on Snapchat. Tell us, we'll set you up.
What to expect at checkout
ID checked at the door. Show ID to the budtender on the floor. Browse the menu — products are sealed and stored behind the counter (Maine OCP requirement). Pay cash or CanPay. Receive child-resistant packaging. Leave with your receipt — keep it for the duration of transit, especially across town.
